BADMINTON STRINGS – HOW DO I CHOOSE?
As with other racquet strings, badminton strings vary according to construction
and thickness and either or both of these variables can affect the performance
of your badminton frame.
CONSTRUCTION:
String construction falls into two main categories: multifilament and
solid-core construction. Where solid core strings such as the Gosen Hy-Sheep
badminton strings are often durable and a good value, multi-filament strings
such as the Ashaway Micro Legend XL, Ashaway Powergut or Yonex BG 80 can offer
superior performance and feel to the discerning player.
THICKNESS:
Badminton strings vary in thickness from .66mm (thinnest) to .8mm (thickest).
The thickness of a string has a direct impact on durability and playability.
Thicker strings are often more durable and a practical choice for the chronic
string breaker. Thinner strings have a higher repulsion rate which equals more
power. The string pattern of your racquet will also give you a guideline as to
which string to choose. Generally, an open stringing pattern is harder on
strings and makes the string bed susceptible to premature breaks on off-center
shots. If your racquet has an open stringing pattern and you tend to break
strings, switching to a thicker, more durable string may be a logical choice.
TENSION:
The tension range for badminton racquets is usually between 16-26 lbs and is
determined by the racquet manufacturer. Stringing at higher tensions reduces the
size of the sweetspot but will increase power if you have a high swing speed. It
is always recommended to string your racquet within the guidelines provided by
your racquet manufacturer.
